Was having issues with viewing my pet's happiness on Classic WoW (without having to open up the menu) and found a solution here, but I wanted to offer an update/clarification on the fix. Gaining loyalty has 2 parameters, time and experience. As others have mentioned even at 25 you still need to kill green+ mobs to "earn experience" for your pet.
